How often should I run background checks on my employees?

This question is best discussed with your corporate legal counsel.  However, most of our clients run a background check once when an employee is hired.  There is a move in some companies to check more often such as once per year.  What is most important is to have an established, documented policy that applies to all employees.

How do I know my applicant provided me with the correct date of birth?   

It is important to take steps to verify the accuracy of the date of birth as it does relate to criminal searches.  A Social Security Trace will show the month and year that the Credit Bureaus have on record.  However, what many companies do is to request to make a copy of the applicants Driver's License for identification purposes.  Most legal advisors we spoke to believe this is ok as long as statements about a company's non discrimination policy are published.
