May 03 2015 Iowa State Senate Vote to Mandate Public School Background Checks
Background checks are an essential step prior to the hiring of teachers in many school districts. However, not all individuals who are employed and work closely with children are subject to the same scrutiny. Surprising to many parents, the State of Iowa only requires background checks for teachers and bus drivers at this time. But that is about to change.
Iowa lawmakers are attempting to legislate that all individuals who interact with children will be required to undergo a background check for records relating to child abuse, adult abuse and sex offender registries. These checks will be re- run every five years. School districts will be expected to pay additional fees for accessing private court history and registry databases. Those individuals affected will include janitors, school aids, cafeteria workers and volunteers. The bill will also add background checks for ice cream truck drivers.
